Some of the Benefits of Biodiesel
"All changes that make a difference in the world
start with one baby step... Dog river started making fuel in
5 gallon pails..

As we grow, sometimes it takes trouble and a lot of hard
work, but its worth it! Dog River has graduated to 40 gallons
at a time or batch!

..we are going to take an even bigger step to a much bigger
processor in the future.
Step
one: Easy to Make
-
Collect waste oil from
your local restaurant. Most proprietors are glad to offer
their waste cooking oil for the asking.
-
Readily available chemical
ingredients include lye and methanol.
-
Common Sense Safety Precautions
- Be familiar with the dangers of caustics and flammable.
-
If the fuel is made using
potassium hydroxide (KOH) instead of lye, the glycerin
byproduct can be used in the correct proportions as a component
in some fertilizers.
Safe and Clean
-
The Biodiesel is the reddish portion of
this picture, and the darker color at the bottom is the
glycerin BI-product which also has a use. The fuel in the
container is then filtered and can be put in your car, your
tractor, a diesel engine powered boat or your oil burner
at home.
-
Biodiesel has a higher
flash point (300F) than its petroleum counterpart (125F).
-
Biodiesel is biodegradable.
-
Non-toxic. Biodiesel is
10 times less toxic than table salt.
-
This fuel is stable and
stores for a year or longer.
|
Works as Heating Fuel
-
Use in an oil burning furnace (may require slight modification)
-
Can be mixed with petroleum-based
heating fuel in any ratio.
-
Safer for chimneys. (Less
soot.)
50 MPG!
-
Any diesel engine can run
on biodiesel.
-
The usual cold weather
precautions are sufficient for biodiesel use.
-
Biodiesel can be blended
in any ratio with petrodiesel.
-
Lubricity. Biodiesel in
as little as a 1% concentration in your fuel tank increases
engine lubricity by 30% to 65%. Consider the new low-sulfur
diesel fuels and their effect on your injector pump.
-
Power is comparable within
5 percent.
-
Much cleaner exhaust emissions.
Compared to petroleum diesel:
-
100% reduction in SO2 *
-
40% to 60% less soot*
-
10% to 50% less carbon
monoxide*
-
10% to 50% less hydrocarbons*
-
97% reduction in phenanthren*
-
56% reduction in benzofloroanthen*
-
71% reduction in benzapyren*
-
13% reduction in aldehydes
and aromatic compounds*
-
NOx emissions may increase
or decrease by 5 to 10%*
-
Carbon neutral. Does not
contribute to Global Warming. Tail pipe CO2 output
is about the same, but consider the source. No longer are
we pumping carbon out of the ground and dumping it into
the atmosphere!
-
Break the petroleum food
chain!
